Quartiere Giardino – Vivere Smart is a residential complex surrounded by greenery southwest of Milan, in the municipality of Cesano Boscone.

The residences are divided into 4 gated cores called “Boschi,” for a total of 26 buildings. The 7- or 9-story buildings are surrounded by large green spaces with internal pedestrian connecting driveways.

The residential complex consists of 1,500 apartments for a total of about 5,000 inhabitants, and is connected to the metro line by an efficient public transportation system. The neighborhood is served by a district heating network controlled by the Prometheus cogeneration power plant, fueled by biomass from the region.

Quartiere Giardino – Living Smart: a pilot project
Enhancing urban areas by making them smart is an operation that can be considered the engine for improving the quality of life of citizens. The Brownfield intervention, that is, the redesign of an existing area to transform it into a smart urban ecosystem, is what we are implementing in Cesano Boscone.

What does it mean to design and live in a smart neighborhood?
Cities today are home to 50 percent of the world’s population and produce 80 percent of the planet’s pollution. They need to be redesigned in radically new, smart, smart ways if we are to ensure that future generations will continue to live on a viable planet. An existing neighborhood can be redesigned in a smart way by acting on a series of technological innovations-coordinated and integrated with each other-acting simultaneously on the introduction of new energy consumption patterns, sustainable mobility solutions, new ways of accessing information, and practices of social inclusion and cohesion generated and managed through the wi-fi network. Among the benefits: consuming less, polluting less and ensuring better participation and quality of life.

The fun theory project indicates and suggests how to correctly separate waste through the positioning of horizontal and vertical infographics, with playful and educational purposes in the existing ecological islands.

The control unit connected to the sensors and weather forecasts detects rainfall, temperature and soil humidity, intervening only when necessary. Thanks also to drip irrigation technology, you can save up to 60% of water resources.

COMMUNITY COMPOSTING
Produce fertilizer from waste.
Thanks to a composting system with a capacity of 1 m3, half a ton of organic waste is eliminated per year and the equivalent of three tons of carbon dioxide is reduced. The product obtained can be used as fertilizer for vegetable gardens, without the need to resort to polluting chemicals, with consequent environmental and economic advantages.

URBAN GARDENS
Shared gardens. Cultivate nature in the city!
They allow you to invest your free time positively and connect with the people who live in the neighborhood, encourage the exchange of knowledge, and respond to the desire to know what you eat. With vegetable gardens you learn and appreciate the seasonality of products, the spread of sustainable cultivation methods, the importance of fighting food waste and generating virtuous circles of solidarity economy.

The introduction of the intelligent LED lighting system guarantees multiple advantages, increasing the liveability of the neighborhood. LED technology consumes much less energy than traditional lamps and is able to guarantee further energy savings by starting automatically at sunset and switching off at the first light of dawn.

How many times in our lives have each of us used a drill, a roller to paint the walls of the house or a ladder?
On closer inspection, few, and yet these objects have a considerable cost and bulk. So why not make these tools a common factor through a real Object Library located within the Neighborhood and available to residents?

The guidelines for reducing energy waste provide citizens with practical advice for reducing domestic energy consumption, monitoring expenses and quantifying savings. Inside Quartiere Giardino, information brochures will be delivered containing some advice for purchasing and managing household appliances, useful for reducing expenses and the ecological impact.
